Academic journals

The RSE first began publishing journals in 1788. In 2019, the RSE began publishing its journals with Cambridge University Press, streamlining the publishing process and ensuring research is open to as many people as possible.

The RSE’s journals are guided by expert Editorial Boards, with each Editor bringing diverse and wide-ranging knowledge of their subject area to the journal. All submissions accepted by Editors are peer reviewed by independent, external subject experts, who recommend whether a paper is accepted or rejected.

Our journals are hosted on Cambridge Core, providing instant online access new research and the journals’ digitised historical content. Our publications are also preserved in CLOCKSS – a community-led, sustainable, online digital archive, meaning your research is accessible to researchers now and in the future.

We want to make publishing with us as straight-forward as possible. You can find author instructions for each of our journals on the journal specific page above, or get in touch with a member of the Editorial Board for more support.

Your institution or organisation may wish to share news of your publication through its own communications channels. This may include internal newsletters, staff, alumni, or student communications, or institutional websites and social media platforms. Authors may find it helpful to share their publication with relevant colleagues or departments.

Engaging with academic and professional audiences on social media can generate more discussion and awareness around your field of research. Authors may choose to share a link to their publication on their social media channels and are welcome to tag the RSE. This allows the RSE to engage with and where appropriate, highlight your work to our audiences.

From time to time, articles published in the RSE’s academic journals may be of wider public or media interest. Where opportunities arise, the RSE will be in touch directly to discuss next steps.
