The RSE, in collaboration with Edinburgh Airport; has installed a photographic portrait exhibition in the airport’s departure lounge featuring some of Scotland’s most prominent female scientists.
Women in Science in Scotland celebrates 26 RSE Fellows – including RSE President, Professor Dame Anne Glover – and all pioneers and leaders in their respective fields. The women hold an object that represents their inspiration to become a scientist or that illustrates their scientific journey and items include solar-powered cells, carbon dioxide locked up inside rocks, a sixth-year school biology project and even a melted kettle element. The portraits are accompanied by an explanation of the object and thoughts from the women on why they became, and what they like about being, a scientist.
Alongside the photographs hangs a mirror where the question is posed ‘See yourself in science?’ to encourage passengers to realise that science is a profession that is open to all.
RSE Chief Executive, Dr Rebekah Widdowfield said:
“Through bringing this exhibition to Edinburgh Airport, we are raising the profile of some of the best and most brilliant scientists in Scotland and showcasing some of the nation’s fantastic talent to the wider world. Our thanks to the Airport for their willingness to join in our celebration of these incredible women”.

“STEM is such a big part of what we do at the airport and is something that Scotland excels at so it’s only right that we promote the expertise of these incredibly talented women to the millions of people that come through our doors every year. We have an incredible story to tell and this exhibition will be the first or final chapter for people travelling out of Scotland’s busiest airport.”

The Women in Science in Scotland exhibition will be on display at Edinburgh Airport’s Gate 9 until the end of January.
