At-Risk Academic Refugee: A Portrait

We will be participating in this years UNESCO RILA Spring School programme discussing our At-Risk Academic Refugee project.

In 2016, the Young Academy of Scotland (YAS) launched its At-Risk Academic Refugees (ARAR) initiative to recognise talented young professionals from Scotland’s refugee and displaced migrant communities. This initiative encouraged outstanding members of the refugee and displaced migrant communities to apply to YAS and provided them with support with their applications. YAS is proud to include 14 ARAR members in its cohort.

In 2019, Glasgow-based portrait painter I.D Campbell produced five portraits of ARAR members, which celebrated their involvement with the RSE and YAS. Read more about the commissioned portraits in the At-Risk Academics Booklet.

We are inviting ARAR members back to discuss the influence and effects of having been painted and their experience over the last year living through this pandemic. Nikki Moran, YAS Facilitating Group Co-chair who looks after the ARAR programme, will also be joining the panel to talk about the programme.

The discussion will be co-chaired by I.D. Campbell, artist and Alison Phipps FRSE, UNESCO Chair: Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts.
