Just launched: RSE Investigates… Language
The Royal Society of Edinburgh has announced the programme for its latest RSE Investigates series, with a full programme built around the concept of language.
RSE Investigates is an annual series of free talks and workshops on a particular topic, giving people a free opportunity to dive deeply into a topic of special cultural interest – and this time it is the past, present and future of language.
Previous RSE Investigates series have been run on subjects such as the creative industries in Scotland, conservation issues, artificial intelligence and climate change.
This series will see the RSE host events on the implementation and implications of artificial intelligence in language translation; a reflection on the successes and shortcomings of the British Sign Language (Scotland) Act 2015; a celebration of International Mother Language Day where people will be invited to learn fractions of new languages from New Scots; an examination of how the meaning and cultural impact of Goths and Gothic architecture and literature has shifted over time, from the sacking of Rome in 410AD, through gothic literature and architecture and to a fashion style.
Other events in the series will include a history of both the English and Scots languages, as told through the medium of 10 historical artefacts, with several other events still to be announced.
The RSE’s Vice President, Public Engagement, Professor Martin Hendry FRSE, said: “I am very proud to promote the latest RSE Investigates series which we have launched today.
“With the modern media landscape now so diverse and atomised, this can present both huge opportunities and challenges for the role of language in society. This latest RSE series will allow participants to take a moment of pause, to reflect and learn about a range of aspects of how we communicate in today’s world.
“From discussing the BSL (Scotland) Act and the opportunity for cultural language exchanges with New Scots, to exploring how languages evolve over time, this programme offers fascinating insights into the changing faces of language in these uncertain times.”
RSE Investigates builds upon the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s comprehensive public engagement programme, which boasts a variety of lectures and workshops held both in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland.
