Tourism is a key human activity but issues concerning tourist behaviour and “overtourism” are gaining significant media attention and encouraging governments to close areas and protect communities.

The RSE Young Academy of Scotland member, Dr Sandro Carnicelli examines tensions in international mobility and argues that the future of tourism needs to be just and sustainable with greater attention to equity. He challenges our tourist-being, discusses the rights of local communities to host and asks how we can be better tourists not only in the future but now.
