The Young People’s Programme

The RSE broadens access to opportunities for young people across Scotland by helping to build their confidence, curiosity and critical thinking.

The RSE and its Fellowship work with young people to deliver engaging, relevant learning experiences that align with the Curriculum for Excellence. Our Young People’s Programme offers a range of year-round activities and events designed to support classroom learning and help young people develop the skills they need for the future.

Sign up for free RSE school talks

The Young People’s Programme offers over 40 free talks that you can book for your classroom. Delivered by experts from the Fellowship and beyond, topics range from forensic science, astronomy and physics to literature, culture, the arts and more. You can sign up for a talk by following these steps:

  1. Browse and select from our available talks.
  2. Fill out the enquiry form.
  3. From there, the Schools team will be in touch to work with you on a suitable date and how we can tailor the talk to your curriculum needs.

School talks are free to primary and secondary schools from P4 to S6. The RSE will cover all speakers’ costs, including travel and accommodation. All the school needs to provide is a venue for the talk and, of course, the audience!

The Young People’s Signature Event

Each year, the RSE offers young audiences the chance to engage with experts, share their perspectives, and explore the issues and themes that matter to them. The Fellowship and Schools Team work alongside young people so they can contribute their ideas to help shape the format of the Young People’s Signature Event, which is unique in its delivery and format each year.

What have teachers and partners said?

  • In Shetland, it is difficult or effectively impossible for us to access academic institutions or “science centres” etc., hence these events are even more significant in putting leading scientists in front of the students.

  • The reaction from the children in my class said it all. I had a couple of children taking notes during Jeremy’s talk so that they could ask questions (these were children who have little interest in reading, and who don’t have much self-confidence when it comes to their Language work). They loved the session – and I could see some of them practising the ‘air flow’ differences in vowels and consonants at their desks afterwards.
