Sister academies

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB) to promote and strengthen scientific co-operation between each other, and scientific collaboration between researchers in Belgium and Scotland. This formal agreement was signed in October 2017.

Italian National Research Council (CNR) logo

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) of Italy to support research and innovation links between Italy and Scotland. This formal agreement was signed in November 2016.

The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters logo

The RSE signed an informal agreement with The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences in May 2000 to promote and strengthen co-operation between researchers in Denmark and Scotland and between the two Academies.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences logo

The RSE signed an informal agreement with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in June 2006, to promote and strengthen co-operation between researchers in Sweden and Scotland and between the two Academies.

Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences logo

The RSE signed an informal agreement with the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow in December, 2013 to promote and strengthen co-operation between researchers in Poland and Scotland.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters logo

The RSE signed an informal agreement with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in September 2005 to promote and strengthen co-operation between researchers in Norway and Scotland and between the two Academies.

Italian National Academy logo

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Italy. This formal agreement was signed in Rome in 2010.

The Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts logo

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Slovenia. This formal agreement was signed in Ljubljana in 2006.

Slovak Academy of Sciences logo

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Slovak Academy of Sciences to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Slovakia. This formal agreement was signed in Edinburgh in 2006.

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Polish Academy of Sciences to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Poland. This formal agreement was signed in 2002.

Hungarian Academy of Sciences logo

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Hungary. This formal agreement was signed in September 2005.

The RSE has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to facilitate, encourage and support research collaboration in all areas between research groups in Scotland and Hungary. This formal agreement was signed in September 2005.

NETWORK

The RSE is a member of ALLEA, the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities, representing more than 50 academies from over 40 countries in Europe. Founded in 1994, ALLEA represents its Member Academies on the European stage and seeks to promote science as a global public good.

ALLEA’s activities aim at shaping the conditions for science and research, providing the best science advice available for citizens and policymakers and strengthening the role of science in society. In the spirit of true collaboration and cooperation, ALLEA offers a platform for European academies to work together on topics of mutual interest and for the betterment of the inhabitants of Europe. Solving challenges in an ever more complex world requires comprehensive interdisciplinary and international cooperation from beginning to end.

The RSE is a member of Connected Scotland. The partner organisations in Connected Scotland assist Scotland’s 19 higher education institutions and 26 colleges to position themselves as world leaders in higher education, and to become an international partner of choice in teaching, research and knowledge exchange.

Connected Scotland aims to build on existing sector collaboration and identify additional opportunities of scale. The aim is to develop new collaborative ventures for Scotland’s higher education institutions, and support them in responding to new opportunities and challenges. Connected Scotland supports the sector’s aspirations for globally-connected research, attracting investment and diverse and talented people.

Commonwealth Science Academies

18 science academies from across the Commonwealth, representing big and small nations around the globe, represent the bloc’s strengths and the importance of international collaboration.

The Society and its partners support scientific collaboration across the Commonwealth through participation in a number of activities, including an informal network of Commonwealth science academies.

In 2022, the RSE joined other Commonwealth science academies from around the globe to call on the Commonwealth Heads of Government for joint action on the interlinked challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
