The Royal Society of Edinburgh, in collaboration with the Scottish Funding Council and the Scottish Government, is pleased to invite applications for the RSE saltire international collaboration awards.
The purpose of the RSE saltire international collaboration award is to facilitate international collaboration between researchers based in Scotland with researchers in the EU for up to two years. Applications are invited from Scottish-based researchers to include a European Higher Education Institute (HEI), Research Institute (RI) or Cultural Institution of your choice as per eligibility. The RSE provides up to £6,000 per year and up to a maximum of £12,000 over two years. The partner institution is expected to provide the equivalent level of funding per two-year joint project.
- For Scottish-based researchers:The Principal Investigator (PI) must be of at least postdoctoral status or equivalent.
- PI must be employed by a Scottish HEI, RI or Cultural Institution.
- Scottish-based collaborators can be employed by either a Scottish HEI, R&D centre or from the innovative business or industry sectors.
- There can be unrestricted number of participants per team. PhD students may be included; however, their international activities (travel, subsistence, etc.) cannot be funded with project money.
- Visits must take place in both directions.
- For European-based researchers:The Principal Investigator (PI) must be of at least postdoctoral status or equivalent.

- European-based collaborators can be employed by either a European HEI, R&D centre or from the innovative business or industry sectors.
- There can be unrestricted number of participants per team. PhD students may be included: however, their international activities (e.g., travel, daily expenses, etc.) cannot be funded with project money.
- Visits must take place in both directions.
- An applicant can only apply once per deadline. Current Scottish-based holders of an RSE Joint Project Award are not eligible to apply. Holders of other RSE awards are eligible to apply.
- RSE saltire international collaboration awards can be held in all academic disciplines.
- Applications will be considered for both bilateral and multilateral projects. The collaboration must be based on a single project.
- The project will consist of two consortium teams or two individuals: one based in Scotland and the other in the partner country/ies.
- The collaboration should involve bilateral and/or multilateral exchanges between Scotland, the partner country or relevant collaborator countries.
The funding will open for applications from Monday 28 June 2021; applicants are required to:

- Create a profile on the RSE CiviCRM, or log in using your existing details
- From Monday 28 June, you can access the online application.
- Complete the details to submit your online application form by Monday 12 July, 12:00
- Upload as part of the online form a statement of support from your head of department and an institutional statement of support and if you are undertaking your research at a different institution to the one from where you are usually employed a statement of support from that institution.
- Successful applications should have a start date between Wednesday 1 September 2021- Tuesday 31 March 2022
