Elected: 2019
Discipline: Biomedical and Cognitive Sciences
Professor Stuart Reid FRSE

Professor of Biomedical Engineering, University of Strathclyde.

Professor Stuart Reid leads a multidisciplinary team working across an array of projects, from regenerative medicine to astrophysics. Alongside Professors Dalby and Curtis at the University of Glasgow, he co-invented ‘nanokicking’, where precise nanoscale vibrations are used to control the behaviour of adult stem cells which can be used to grow bone in the lab from a patient’s own cells. Clinical trials of surgical bone graft for civilian landmine survivors, and possible treatments of osteoporosis in spinal injured patients, are now underway. His team also pioneer processes for manufacturing laser mirror coatings, holding the world record for the lowest optical absorption amorphous silicon.
