Professor Stephen Lawrie hails from St Andrews, studied Medicine in Aberdeen and after a Glasgow sojourn has worked in Edinburgh for more than 30 years. As a clinical academic psychiatrist, he sees patients with major mental illnesses and his research is primarily in understanding and treating schizophrenia. He has made notable contributions in applying cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to elucidate the neurobiology of schizophrenia, differentiate major psychiatric disorders and predict psychosis before people become ill, and developing multi-centre capabilities. Stephen is also enthusiastic about public engagement, training clinical and scientific academics, and evidence-based psychiatry. Outside of work, he has three children and is actively interested in art, football, golf, literature, music and poetry.
