Professor Sheila Bird is a biostatistician who emphasises study design, statistical reporting standards, and survival analyses enabled by registry data. As well as being renowned for her practical contributions to analysing clinical data, she has also made numerous influential contributions to improving the analysis of such data in medical journals. Sheila has also been an influential and important champion of intelligent use of statistical methods in public policy including work on the health of prisoners and also on HIV, hepatitis C, vCJD and other drugs-related deaths. She has led the Biostatistics Unit at the Medical Research Council since 1996 and received an OBE in 2011 for services to social science.
