Professor Roger James Mercer OBE FRSE

Former Secretary, Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.

Roger Mercer was born on 12 September 1944 at Bushey, Hertfordshire. He died on 3 December 2018 at his home in Duddingston, Edinburgh.

Roger Mercer was born towards the end of the Second World War, but he hardly survived it being ejected from his pram by the explosion of a V2 rocket. He demonstrated an interest in archaeology from an early age through the exploration of his grandfather’s collection of flints gathered on Blackheath Common and by the age of eight had decided to be an archaeologist. This aim was furthered by participation in excavations as a schoolboy, including at Fishbourne Roman villa under the direction of Barry Cunliffe, and Staines causewayed enclosure under Reay Robertson Mackay.
