Professor Robert Allan Houston FRSE

Professor of Early Modern History, University of St Andrews.

Professor Rab Houston is a leading social historian of Scotland and England (c. 1500 – 1850) whose work has ranged widely over education and literacy, population (including Scots abroad), urbanisation, law and, most recently, the history of medicine and psychiatry. He aims to not only add Scottish experience to the main line of English history, creating a more comprehensive British or European perspective, but to also open up new questions and debates within the wider history of Britain and Europe, using Scotland as a leading case study.
