Professor Stewart Mercer

Stewart Mercer is an academic GP who researches the needs of patients with multiple long term conditions (multimorbidity), especially those with mental and physical health problems. Much of his research over the last 25 years has focused on inequalities in health and healthcare quality, especially in relation to socioeconomic deprivation. He has a long-standing interest in the importance of practitioner empathy, and developed and validated the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure, which has been used in over 35 countries in research, evaluation, and teaching. He was the director of the Scottish School of Primary Care from 2014-2020.
