Emeritus Bishop Wardlaw Professor of Greek, University of St Andrews
I was Professor of Greek at St Andrews from 1995 till my retirement in 2020 (Wardlaw Professor from 2014). I had previously taught at the universities of Oxford, Cambridge (where I was a fellow of Corpus Christi College), London, and Birmingham, and I have held visiting positions at six universities in Belgium (Louvain), Canada (McMaster), Italy (Rome), and the USA (Cornell, Chicago). I am the author of thirteen books (two of which have won international prizes) and over one hundred articles on ancient Greek literature, philosophy, and culture. I have given invited lectures in twenty-one countries and my work has been translated into eight languages. I am FBA as well as FRSE.
