Professor Peter Simmonds

Professor Peter Simmonds has spent his career studying the evolution of virus infections. After gaining his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1988, Peter began working at the University in a Post-Doctoral Fellow role which led to being appointed Professor of Virology in 2001. His recent research focuses on disease impacts, molecular epidemiology and transmission dynamics of enteroviruses and other picornaviruses, and on evolutionarily-based studies of virus/host interactions at the level of innate cell defences.
