Professor Peter Mossey
Professor of Craniofacial Development and Consultant in Orthodontics, University of Dundee
My major contributions to healthcare have been in the context of cleft lip and palate and more generally in health inequalities and I am currently President of the Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network. The thrust of my work is to translate this to Public Health, particularly prevention of disease by addressing amendable risk factors via behaviour change. My work in genetics and gene-environment interaction in various parts of the world through my Directorship of a WHO Collaborating Centre in Dundee has been to advance the aspirations of WHO in that the ultimate scientific and humanitarian objective for birth defects is primary prevention. Our work has concluded that different genetic and environmental risk factors pertain in different countries, communities and ethnic groups throughout the world, and I lead work towards achievement of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in low to middle income countries.
