Professor Michael Eddleston
Professor of Clinical Toxicology, University of Edinburgh
Professor Eddleston is a clinical pharmacologist and toxicologist. His research particularly aims to reduce deaths from pesticide self-poisoning, a cause of over 150,000 premature deaths annually, and a key global means of suicide. This work involves clinical trials in South Asian district hospitals and large community-based trials to identify effective approaches. This is complemented by antidote studies in animals, work with anthropologists to better understand the meaning of self-harm, and work with the WHO/FAO and pesticide regulators via Edinburgh’s Centre for Pesticide Suicide Prevention to support implementation worldwide. He also treats poisoned patients in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
