Professor Martin Price has two lifelong passions: music and mountains – which became his vocation. In 2000, he established the Centre for Mountain Studies at Perth College, University of the Highlands and Islands and was awarded the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Mountain Development in 2009. He retired in 2021. Martin has been a key factor in putting – and keeping – mountains on global and European policy and research agendas, and has published many books, and organised major conferences, on mountain issues. His second focus is on Biosphere Reserves – regions for integrating conservation and sustainable development – and he has played major roles in UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, which designates these special places.
