The RSE Fellowship comprises around 1,800 leading experts in the sciences, arts, business, professions and the third and public sectors, with links to Scotland. This range of expertise within the Fellowship places us in a unique position to provide an informed, interdisciplinary response to issues facing Scotland and internationally.

Our Fellows from academia, business and public service are among the most distinguished in their fields. We engage and connect nationally and internationally to share knowledge and tackle the most pressing challenges of the modern world.

Professor Marc Desmulliez
Associate Principal (Impact), Heriot-Watt University
Professor Marc Desmulliez is Associate Principal for Impact at Heriot-Watt University. He has a background combining electrical engineering, optoelectronics and theoretical physics. Research interests include microwave sensing, medical device manufacturing and nature-inspired engineering. He has spun out two companies, MicroStencil Ltd (2003) and MicroSense Technologies Ltd (2017) and a start-up company Birthing Solutions Ltd (2017). Marc recently created the Nature Inspired Manufacturing Centre (NIMC) to understand how to translate biological processes into manufacturing principles, and to research a mythology that would allow companies to systematically harvest the wonders that nature can offer in terms of design solutions, material efficiency and functional interfaces. He currently manages the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre.
