Professor Jane Stuart-Smith
Professor of English Language and Linguistics, University of Glasgow
Professor Jane Stuart-Smith has been Professor of Phonetics and Sociolinguistics at the University of Glasgow since 2013, first joining the University in 1997 as Lecturer in English Language. Jane established the internationally-recognised Glasgow University Laboratory of Phonetics (GULP). With members of GULP and national and international collaborators, she considers the many relationships between speech and society, taking the rich linguistic variation in Scotland as the basis for her work. Jane also works to promote the public understanding of speech and accents by (for example) leading the development of the popular website, Seeing Speech (with Lawson and Scobbie, Queen Margaret University Edinburgh).
