Fellowship

Ian Brown, playwright (produced UK-wide and abroad and Scottish Society of Playwrights Founder-Chair), poet, Emeritus Professor in Drama (Kingston University, London) and Scottish Literature Honorary Senior Research Fellow (Glasgow University), has been a British Council overseas officer and second-longest-serving (1986-94) Arts Council of Great Britain Drama Director. At Queen Margaret University (1994-2002), he became Dean of Arts, Scottish Centre for Cultural Management and Policy Director and Senior Management Group member. From 2002, he ran his own successful management consultancy: UK clients included local authorities, Scottish Arts Council, foundations, universities and cultural producers; overseas clients Russian and Hong Kong higher education institutions and, through the Council of Europe, Armenian, Azerbaijani and Georgian cultural ministries. Returned to university research in 2010. President, Association of Scottish Literary Studies, 2010-15, and since 2011 Convener of ASLS Publications Board. Joined Saltire Society Council (2010-16) and its Executive Board (2011-16), becoming national Convener (2014-16), returning to Saltire Council in 2019. Since 2020, trustee of Robert Burns Ellisland Trust. Published widely on Scottish Literature and Drama and General Editor of the ground-breaking three-volume Edinburgh History of Scottish Literature (2007), his History as Theatrical Metaphor was shortlisted for the 2017 Saltire Research Book of the Year. He is an active writer, researcher and academic/cultural management consultant.
