Professor Hamish Simpson
George Harrison Law Professor of Orthopaedics and Trauma, University of Edinburgh
Hamish read natural sciences and medicine at Cambridge and Oxford. He specialises in musculoskeletal infection, trauma, early arthritis and children with complex limb disorders. Throughout his career he has worked collaboratively with engineers and natural scientists and runs interdisciplinary research programmes in bone and joint health and infection, developing the first musculoskeletal infection unit in the UK. He has served as President of multiple UK and International Orthopaedic Research and Clinical Societies. He led the Scottish national recruitment process for Orthopaedics, ensuring that EDI imbalances were addressed overseeing a substantial increase in female appointees. He has promoted the next generation of surgical academics, supervising over 50 doctoral candidates, many of whom are now in academic leadership posts around the world.
