Research interests: late medieval and Tudor literature and cultural history.
Recent publications include Imagining Spectatorship from the Mysteries to the Shakespearian Stage (2016), co-written with J.J. McGavin, and John Heywood: Comedy and Survival in Tudor England (2020).
He serves on the Council of the AHRC and chaired its Advisory Board, is Chair of the REF2021 subpanel for English Language and Literature, and a Trustee of the English Association. He is a Fellow of the English Association, the Royal Historical Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Agder Academy of Arts and Sciences, Norway.
