Prof. Hart gained a BA in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, then a MSc and PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. Since 2008, she has been a Professor at Edinburgh Napier University. Her work takes inspiration from the natural world to develop algorithms that enable computer systems to autonomously learn over time, adapting to new tasks and improving with experience. In 2021, she gave a TED talk her work on evolving robots; her work has also been featured in the Guardian and the New Scientist. She was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Evolutionary Computation (MIT Press, 2016-2023) and was awarded the ACM Award for Outstanding Contribution to Evolution Computation in 2023. She was elected a Fellow the RSE in 2022.
