Professor Douglas Philp
Professor in Chemistry, University of St Andrews
Professor Douglas Philp is a chemist whose research probes the processes that were central to the emergence of life on Earth. By applying a range of experimental and computational methods, his laboratory has developed synthetic replicators—molecules that can copy themselves from appropriate feedstocks. These replicators can coexist, cooperate, and manage their replication within interconnected networks that can be programmed and exhibit predictable behaviour based on their connectivity and inputs. He joined the faculty of the University of St Andrews in 2000 and has held academic positions at the University of Birmingham (UK) and Northwestern University (USA).
