Professor Charles ffrench-Constant
Pro-Vice Chancellor for Medicine and Health Sciences, University of East Anglia
Professor Charles ffrench-Constant is a world-leading clinical scientist working in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS). He researches regenerative therapies for myelin – the protective coating which surrounds nerves and protects them from damage. When myelin is attacked by immune cells, it causes the disabling symptoms of MS. His most important discoveries include the stem cell population that generates myelin-forming cells throughout life; and the critical role of brain extracellular matrix in myelination. Charles joined the University of Edinburgh in 2008 as Professor of Medical Neurology, after spending almost 20 years at the University of Cambridge.
