Calum Colvin’s expertise is in the area of contemporary art practices and he is Professor of Fine Art Photography at the University of Dundee. His large-scale photographic artworks explore themes such as national identity, culture and history. His artworks are multi-referential and complex. His work frequently utilizes the unique fixed-point perspective of the camera to create elaborate and colourful narratives which accommodate any number of potential readings. In recent years Colvin has made numerous contemporary and historical portraits of renonwned Scottish figures such as James Macmillan, Robert Burns, Lord Byron and Sir David Brewster.
Colvin has also taught art at Dundee University for many years, where he has been Head of Art + Philosophy, Art + Media and Contemporary Art Practices. He is currently Associate Dean of Research. Colvin was awarded an OBE in 2000 and became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2004.
