Bob Furness has over 35 years’ experience in academic ornithology. He has published over 300 scientific papers and supervised over 55 PhD students. In Google scholar his publications have been cited 30,000 times, with an h-index of 92. A recently published database of the world’s top 100,000 scientific researchers’ career research citation score with self-citations excluded, placed Bob rank number one out of all researchers with primary research in the subfield ornithology. Bob chaired the International Panel of Experts in Marine Ecology (IAPEME) set up by the Danish authorities to oversee the environmental monitoring work associated with the world’s first major offshore wind farms, at Horns Rev and Nysted. He has worked on assessing impacts of offshore wind on seabirds throughout the development of this industry. Bob is a member of JNCC Marine Protected Areas sub-group and has chaired ICES Working Groups on Seabird Ecology, on Sandeel stock assessment, and on assessment of stocks of short-lived fish (such as sprat). Bob has been a Board member of NatureScot and Chair of NatureScot’s Scientific Advisory Committee for eight years.
