Narrating my experience begins with arguments. For 34 years at the Bar, I handled other people’s disputes. Now, at the heart of a public body, I am more interested in preventing them. Secondly, with the Kirk as client for 18 years, I learned about a religious body. One issue predominated: facing a deep divide, and committed principles on both sides, could it progress? And finally, I’m back where I started: law in social care. Again, the dilemma of protection versus autonomy. The choice of tablet or fudge is interesting (literally too), as is preferring deliberate hopefulness over naïve optimism.
