Professor Jonathan Spencer is Professor of the Anthropology of South Asia at the University of Edinburgh. He has carried out fieldwork in Sri Lanka since the early 1980s, concentrating at first on rural change and local politics, but writing more recently on ethnic conflict, political violence and political non-violence. In 2007 he published a book on the anthropology of ‘the political’ in South Asia (Anthropology, Politics, and the State) and in 2014 he published a second book which examines the work of religious organisations in war and peace in Sri Lanka (Checkpoint, Temple, Church and Mosque). Jonathan was elected a Fellow on the British Academy in 2018.
