Jon Oberlander held a Chair in Epistemics in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He was Director of the University’s Data Technology Institute, and Co-Director of its Centre for Design Informatics. His research sat at the intersection of computational linguistics and cognitive science, and aimed at getting computers to talk (and write) like individual people. He had a long-standing interest in personalization via natural language generation, particularly in the field of cultural heritage. This led to work on context-sensitive interpretation and navigation in virtual and physical museums, and to projects exploring human-robot interaction.
