Professor James Wilson Ironside CBE FRSE

Professor of Clinical Neuropathology, University of Edinburgh.

Professor James Ironside is a leading expert on the neuropathology of prion diseases. Current research interests include mechanisms of neurodegeneration in prion diseases and other forms of dementia, developing enhanced techniques for the detection of prions and the neuropathology of paediatric brain tumours. After training at the University of Dundee, he held various positions at hospitals in Dundee, Brechin and Sheffield before joining the University of Leeds as Lecturer in Pathology in 1986. James has been Professor of Clinical Neuropathology at the University of Edinburgh since 2000. In 2006 he was awarded a CBE for services to medicine and healthcare.
