Hans Meidner enjoyed two reputations. He was a distinguished plant physiologist making important contributions to our knowledge of stomatal behaviour. But he was also widely known for his active and wholehearted commitment to world peace and support of human rights. Indeed, it was probably this life-long commitment that he regarded as a major contribution of his life. No starry-eyed idealist, Hans brought a tough-minded grasp of political facts and realities to his campaigning zeal, and it is for his public-spirited activities as well as for his scientific reputation that many of his friends in Scotland will remember him.
