Professor Geoffrey John Barton FRSE

Professor of Bioinformatics and Head of the Division of Computational Biology, University of Dundee.

Professor Geoffrey Barton joined the University of Dundee in 2001 and became the first Chair of Bioinformatics in Scotland. His research is on the development and application of computational methods to improve the understanding of biological systems. His main focus is on analysing biological sequences (DNA, RBA, Protein), in context with evolution, human genetic variation, three-dimensional structure and function. Several of his software tools that exploit visualisation and machine learning are in daily use by tens of thousands of scientists and students worldwide. In his spare time, Geoff plays the flute and keyboard and maintains the Dundee West End Weather Station.
