Professor Sir James Hough HonFRSE
Sir James Hough OBE is an internationally recognised experimental physicist working in the field of gravitational wave detection. As Director and latterly Associate Director of the Institute for Gravitational Research at Glasgow University he has brought the UK to the forefront of this area and led research which contributed to the discovery of gravitational waves from coalescing binary systems of black holes and neutron stars.
James, with colleagues, developed innovative and practical laboratory techniques including laser stabilisation, quasi-monolithic bonding of materials for ultra low loss pendulum systems used in gravitational wave detectors and measurement of ultra low optical loss.
A Fellow of the Royal Society of London, he is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Sociey and the American Physical Society and an honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
