Professor of Medicine and Director, MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit

Professor Moffat Nyirenda is Director of the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and Professor of Medicine (Global Non-Communicable Diseases) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. A diabetologist and endocrinologist, he trained in Edinburgh, where he later served as an MRC Clinician Scientist and Honorary Physician at the University of Edinburgh. He was the first Professor of Research at the University of Malawi College of Medicine and Associate Director of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme. Internationally recognised for defining Africa’s “lean diabetes” phenotype, his work has transformed understanding of cardiometabolic risk and influenced clinical practice across the continent.
