Professor Jano van Hemert FRSE

Professor Jano van Hemert is a Senior Member of IEEE. He holds an MSc degree in computer science (1998) and a PhD degree in mathematics and physical sciences (2002) from Leiden University, The Netherlands.
van Hemert is the Director of Data Services for EPCC at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of over 140 publications and the inventor on 100 granted patents across 7 patent families. He leads the Edinburgh International Data Facility, which hosts the Scottish National Safe Haven.
van Hemert was a Data Science Manager at Amazon from 2022 to 2024 specialising in AI for customer engagement. Until 2022, he directed the research at Optos—a medical device company—where his team commercialised many features on medical devices. From 2010 to 2023, he was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his leadership in the research programme of the UK National e-Science Centre supported by a prestigious EPSRC Platform Grant. Before that he held research associate and fellow posts at the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) of the Netherlands, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Vienna University of Technology.
