Professor Ian Ganley studies autophagy, an essential intracellular recycling process that maintains cellular health. His research primarily explores how damaged mitochondria are cleared through this pathway, a function often impaired in various diseases, particularly neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s. His team has identified key mechanisms involved in mitochondrial autophagy and has developed tools to study this that are helping researchers and pharmaceutical companies in discovering and validating new therapeutic targets.
