Guidance for nomination

Eligibility to nominate or second a candidate

Making a nomination

One nomination per year may be made by an Ordinary Fellow for Ordinary or International Fellowship. Existing nominations in their second year of consideration do not count towards this limit.

The Proposer:

  • Must not be from the institution(s) that is the Candidate’s current place of work.
  • Must not be partners or associates who have influence or control over the candidate’s professional or business interests.
  • Must not be members of RSE Council, Fellowship Committee, or the Divisional Panel that will consider the proposal. (Note: It is acceptable for a Divisional Panel member to propose a candidate if they will be reviewed by a different panel.)
  • Must not be a recent supervisor, close collaborator, or family member.

Seconding a nomination

There must be two Seconders for each nomination who may be Ordinary, International or Honorary Fellows. There is no limit on the number of nominations a Fellow can second but the number per Fellow will be monitored.

Please note that:

  • Only one seconder can be from the same institution(s) that is the Candidate’s current place of work
  • Neither Seconder should a be partners or associates who have influence or control over the candidate’s professional or business interests.
  • A seconder cannot be a member of Council or the Fellowship Committee, or a member of the Divisional Panel that will consider the nomination.
  • Neither Seconder should be a recent supervisor, close collaborator, or family member.

Lifecycle of a nomination

A nomination for Ordinary or International Fellowship will be considered for two consecutive years unless it is placed on hold, withdrawn or held over for need of additional references. Candidates who are unsuccessful after two years of consideration may be re-nominated after a fallow period two years.

Updating a nomination that is to be considered in its second year

Any substantive changes that would strengthen the nomination may be submitted by the Proposer as an addendum. Such changes could include: change of role or promotion, new grants awarded and papers published, new areas of public engagement, new external roles undertaken or honours granted.

On submission of an addendum a new Candidate Declaration form must be submitted in year 2 of a nomination.

Completing the online forms (Ordinary and International)

Nomination forms must be completed by the Fellow proposing the candidate. Please note that nominations must be submitted before the deadline of Friday 26 June, 17:00. Go to election timeline.

  • Nomination forms are to be completed and submitted online. We provide template forms (Word documents) for you to use in preparation, before completing the online version. When preparing the submission, you will be able to save a draft, but you must fully submit the form before the deadline.
  • Nomination Addendum forms, for candidates in Year 2 of the cycle, are completed and emailed to the Fellowship Team. They will be added to the existing nomination for further review.

Proposers should work together with candidates to collate the information and complete the form.
