Dr Barbara Lane
Director and Fellow of Fire Safety Engineering
Dr Barbara Lane is an expert in fire safety engineering and received her BAI from Trinity College Dublin in 1992 and PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 1997. She is the leader of the Applied Innovation and Technology Group at Arup, a highly specialised team of practitioners in the Built Environment and represents Arup University on Arup’s UK Regional Board. Barbara has crystalised fire safety engineering as a profession by immersing it in the field of building design and construction; and has integrated it with other disciplines by incorporating structural engineering into fire analysis, driving competence, education, regulation and stakeholder relationships. One of the first to study, develop and bring to practice the explicit coupled analysis of structures and fire-generating methods that migrated from science to the mainstream, Barbara has a particular interest in applied research for improving standards and skills in the construction industry. She has partnered with the University of Edinburgh, amongst other academic institutions, for over 20 years and was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2016 for services to fire safety engineering.
