Elected: 2019
Discipline: Cell and Molecular Biology
Professor Donal O’Carroll FRSE

Professor of Stem Cell Biology, University of Edinburgh.

Professor Donal O’Carroll is a world-leading molecular biologist whose research explores the germline – the cell lineage that produces sperm and egg cells. The germline is responsible for the continuity of life and its integrity is essential for the health of a species or society in a human context. His research focuses on the function of RNA-based regulatory pathways in mammalian germ cell development, homeostasis, competence and ageing. Donal’s contributions have deepened our understanding of reproductive, RNA, stem cell and biology. He is the Associate Director of the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, the Head of the Institute for Stem Cell Research and a group leader at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology.
