Professor David Eric Lothian Johnston FRSE

Professor David Johnston is an academic and practising lawyer. From 1993 – 1999 he was Regius Professor of Civil Law, University of Cambridge, and has held visiting Professor positions at Pantheon-Sorbonne University, France, and University of Osaka, Japan. Although David no longer teaches law, he maintains his interests in legal history, especially classical Roman law and is seeking to understand the rules of Roman law in their social and economic context. David’s legal work focuses on public law, in particular constitutional issues, human rights and freedom of information. In 2005, he was appointed as Queen’s Council. At present, he is Commissioner of the Scottish Law Commission, that statutory body charged with promoting reform of the law of Scotland.
